The Stelvio Pass & the Giro d'Italia

It was in 1953 when, during the Giro d'Italia Italy, the riders competed for the first time on the hairpins of the Stelvio pass. It is a stage that we would all like to review: Coppi noticed that Koblet (pink jersey) had some difficulty and with the his team starts pushing harder on the pedals on the side of South Tyrolean Stelvio. The Campionissimo literally flies to the summit where, between high snow walls, a great number of fans are waiting him. It remains only the descent to Bormio. At the finish line Coppi passes solo. Fornara and Bartali rank the places of honor at the stage more than two minutes later. A mythical stage that sanctified two idols: Fausto Coppi and the Stelvio.

The Cima Coppi changes from year to year, depending on the altitude profile of the Giro d'Italia, but the Cima Coppi par excellence remains the Stelvio Pass, which at 2758m is the highest point ever reached by the Giro. The Stelvio has been used in the 1972, 1975, 1980, 1994, 2005, 2012, 2017 editions. Next time it will be on May 23rd 2017 with the stage Rovetta Bormio
